Donating Duo: Kim and Megan Bishopp

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas has grown significantly in the 10 years of our existence.   The growth is not only in the need for blood within our community, but the increase of those willing to roll up their sleeves for local patients.  One way we have been able to expand our donor base is by word of mouth.  The best example of this comes from some of our platelet donors – parents and their children who donate platelets together.

One such donating duo – Kim and Megan Bishopp donate platelets every two weeks.  Kim came in to donate platelets this week, shortly after returning from a vacation to Orlando.  Kim, a Secretary at Carolinas Medical Center, recruited her daughter Megan, an OR Nurse at Carolinas Medical Center.  Megan is pictured below.  Both Kim and Megan see just how many blood transfusions are needed a day in our local hospitals.

Kim was compelled to donate blood when her friend’s child needed brain surgery and many blood transfusions.  As Kim says, “Blood donation is one thing she can do consistently, that provides the most benefit to the community.”

Kim has been married 29 years, has 2 children, and a yorkie pup named Zoe.  Her son, who she will inevitably recruit to donate blood, is finishing up his undergrad.  She is an avid reader.  Her favorite authors are Grisham and Evanovich.

As our community continues to grow, we are thankful for donors like Kim and Megan.  We are always pleased when donors come in who have about us from other donors.  It is especially rewarding to see families donate together – families who understand that our community has an ever present need for blood and are willing to sacrifice their time to fill that need.
